The City Rail Link (CRL) is a game-changer for Auckland. Not only will the project have a significant impact on improving transport links for the people of Auckland, it is also the largest transport infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in New Zealand.

As part of the City Rail Link, the Britomart East Junction improvements simplified and added resilience to the existing network while forming an integral part of the overall Auckland rail network.

Martinus was sole sourced to deliver the $90 million Britomart East works, including the installation of 1:7.5 scissor crossovers on an existing slab track, replacement of three 1:18 slab track turnouts, 1:7.5 double slip slab track, rigid overhead bar replacement, relocation of tunnels walls, tunnel roof strengthening, and associated rail systems works.  New Zealand firsts included the use of both the Martinus Zephir (shunting vehicle) and Track Laying Points System (TLPS).

All works were undertaken during complex Christmas Block-of-Lines (temporary line shutdown) with the intense design staging requirements.  Martinus developed a programme with KiwiRail and City Rail Link Limited to reconfigure the Britomart Tunnel within tight time constraints.  This included a methodology for installing new slab track turnouts, and a sectional scissor construction that drove a significant reduction in programme length.
